Franciscan Sisters of St. Anna’s New Mission in Tanzania

The Franciscan Sisters of St. Anna (FSSA), commissioned three of her members to a new mission in Dodoma, Tanzania on 21st, May, 2019. The commissioning of Sr. Janet Ombima, Sr. Vincent Wanjiku and Sr. Mary Everlyne Awich at Utawala, the generalate house for the FSSA came following the invitation of Archbishop Beatusi Kinyaiya OFM, Cap and Jesuit Priests running St. Peter Clever’s High School.
During the commissioning, the Superior General Sr. Mary Benigna Aoko, expressed the need for education, pastoral and medical care to the people of Dodoma, Tanzania hence the sending of the three sisters. She said that this is a sign of growth for the congregation to stretch to other parts of the world.

In his sermon, the main celebrant Rev. Fr. Bosco Kamau, SPS the parish priest of Holy Family Catholic Church Utawala, encouraged the three sisters to courageously go and make disciples of Christ wherever they are sent. He said this reflecting on how Christ charged his disciples to proclaim good news to the entire nation.
“It is not the end but the beginning of the life of the Church. The disciples were given a missionary mandate, to go out to the whole world and proclaim the joy of the gospel,” Fr. Bosco said adding “Go make disciples of all nations. It may seem a mission impossible but courageously and confidently go out to witness to the risen Lord.”
He further encouraged the three sisters to go beyond their comfort zones to the whole world and proclaim the Christ’s gospel. “The task Jesus set before his missionary disciples was to reach beyond the comfort zones of their own friends, their own families and their own neighborhoods and those who simply agreed with them. Therefore, go out to the whole world, bring the good news to all the nation,” he said.
The commissioning was also marked with various sacred symbols which were issued to the three sisters to give them the opportunity to reflect on the new mission they were to begin in a new land. These symbols included the Franciscan Cross, the Kenya National Flag, two images for the foundresses of FSSA congregation and the candle.
